Department of Physical Education
The Department of Physical Education is one of the oldest academic departments of the institution. It caters to the needs of students coming from rural backgrounds and helps equip them with the ability to transform academic subject knowledge into a practical, strategic career tool, while also providing a good sports environment.
The department follows the curriculum prepared by Panjab University, Chandigarh, and aims to promote academic excellence. Sports information sessions, seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and extension programmes are organized by coaches of various sports at regular intervals to hone the skills of students.
Students are helped to develop a keen competitive spirit in the constant pursuit of excellence.

To emerge as a premier sports centre for the holistic development of intellectually vibrant, morally grounded, and socially responsible, physically strong students. Guided by the core and timeless values of the SGPC, the department strives to instil critical inquiry, effective communication, creativity, and cultural understanding, as well as truth, integrity, compassion, equality, and selfless service. Through quality education and lifelong learning, it aspires to empower students to become globally competent professionals and responsible citizens who make meaningful contributions to society while upholding rich humanitarian and national values.
Mission
- Encourage students to develop and maintain physical fitness through regular participation in sports, games, and exercise, and create awareness about healthy lifestyles, nutrition, and wellness practices.
- Deliver comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in physical education, sports sciences, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, and health education through innovative teaching-learning methods.
- Prepare students for careers in teaching, coaching, sports management, fitness training, officiating, and sports administration.
- Equip students with the leadership, communication, and organizational skills required in the sports industry.
- Instil values such as discipline, fairness, respect, integrity, teamwork, and responsibility, and encourage adherence to ethical standards in sports and professional practice.
- Promote research activities in physical education and sports sciences, encouraging innovation and the application of scientific principles to improve sports performance and health outcomes.
- Provide opportunities for students to organize and manage sports events, tournaments, and recreational activities, cultivating decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership abilities.
- Identify and nurture sporting talent through systematic training and coaching programmes, supporting athletes in achieving excellence at intercollegiate, state, national, and international levels.

Programmes Offered
Department of Physical Education
Physical Education offered through Discipline Specific Core (DSC) papers (Semester 1–6) and Major/Minor courses (Semester 3–6). Course structure and credit distribution follow Panjab University, Chandigarh guidelines.
Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs)
- PSO1 Foundations of Physical Education and Sports: defines what a student will master upon completing the course.
- PSO2 Athletic Care and Rehabilitation: a specialized discipline focused on preventing, evaluating, managing, and treating sports-related musculoskeletal injuries.
- PSO3 Sports Training: a systematic, scientific process designed to prepare athletes for optimal performance.
- PSO4 Sports Psychology: the scientific study of how psychological factors influence athletic performance and how physical activity affects mental well-being.
- PSO5 Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation: a healthcare specialty dedicated to restoring movement, strength, and functional independence.
- PSO6 Exercise Physiology / Exercise and Sports Science: specific, measurable outcomes defining what a graduate will know, understand, and be able to do upon completing the programme.
